Hi.. I just started working at a new small firm on a freelance basis so I don't have much clout yet. I get along with everyone ok, but there is one junior co-worker who is driving me nuts. She's nice and generous and all, but I think she's completely inmature... complaining about all aspects of her job, surfing on myspace/doing her hmwk at work, etc. The worse is that she gets whiney or sweetens up and asks for help.. but my boss seems to like her, so... I usually put my earphones on to tune the girl out. But just the other day, she was being more annoying than usual and when she came to ask me a question, I swear, I smelled pot reeking all over her breath.

That was unreal! I don't believe in narc-ing on anyone, but that seriously irritated me.. b/c now I wonder how many times she has done it and if she carries her weight at work. I want to ignore her, but I don't think I can do that in a small environment. Any suggestions?

Best advice you will get is to do nothing at all. Believe me, you're not the only one who can smell pot if it's that strong, and it isn't on her breath it's in her hair and on her clothes. She sounds like a royal loser anyway, she'll be fired soon.

Given the situation you describe, you are best off to mind your own business. I hate to say that, but having spent many years in the "business" world, I can tell you, doing the right thing often hurts you more than the miscreant. she'll be gone soon enuff.

let it go since i work in a school i would have to turn her in or loose my own job but ur not it that spot so just keep tuning her out. U said she was nice do u want to ruin her life and if u say something u will get bad rep

Do nothing. Next time tell her the perfume she has on makes you allergic and sick to your stomach and that you wouldn't mind if she did come to close when she wore it.

Act naive as if you do not know what pot is. or even ask if it is incense????

Okay first NARCING isn't cool! 2. Ignore her and if she wants help tell her to learn it herself or ignore her or find something else to do 3. just because she might be a #%#$% doesn't mean you call the cops cuz you caught her out of act, what if someone didn't like you just because or perhaps even with a legitimate reason and called the cops on you..............pretty $#@#$! up

If she is actually doing something to hinder you and the work environment, and she isn't actually doing her work, then complain about her. But from the sounds of it, it seems like she just really annoys you and you're just speculating about her pulling her weight.

Suppose she does smoke pot on her own time, there's nothing to say it would hinder her work performance...I believe it's something you see as questionable character on your own personal judgement and it's not a good enough reason to go complain about her.

Believe me, I have had some really damn annoying co-workers and ones that I didn't agree with what they were like in their own personal ways, but unless it's something that affected the workplace then I had no right going to anyone higher up about it.

P.s. If it annoys you for her to ask for help, next time don't help her, simple as that...make up an excuse, just avoid this girl when possible.
