Problems with coworkers blog?

A co-worker of mine managed to fracture her hand at my work (don't ask me how, we work technical support for a large communications company) over a month and a half ago. She maintains a page on MySpace and updates it regularly. I am a friend of hers on the website and about 2 weeks ago I noticed the pictures section of the page she had nothing but images of her "having a good time" with her friends, drinking and basically enjoying her time off. Now, of course no one says she has to spend her disability time in her home doing nothing (but it does irk me to see this) What disturbs me is the fact that in her blog she's posted several times that she's currently looking for a job...but plans to use up all her short term disability from the company we both work for before leaving. What should I do? Nothing? Should I inform my boss?

Your coworker is committing worker's compensation fraud. It is a crime, and she can be prosecuted for intentionally defrauding the company. Not only is she being deceitful, she's being incredibly stupid about it by boasting to all and sundry on the net what her intentions are. Perhaps she also sustained some brain damage when she injured her wrist.



In your shoes, I would let your boss or the HR person know about the MySpace page. What they choose to do with the info is up to them, and your conscience will be clear....and you will earn the undying gratitude of the rest of us who pay (directly or indirectly) for the incredibly high cost of work comp premiums that end up paying for you pal's margaritas.

Yeah I think you should tell your manager what you saw, and let them handle it. The way you feel about this is totally justified.

I would stay out of it if it was me. Firstly she's entitled to look for another job. Secondly she hasn't been off a ridiculous amount of time yet, a fracture in her hand is going to take 6 to 8 weeks to heal and if you do technical support then it's all about the hands right? Thirdly you are correct, a broken hand does not mean she has to lay in bed during her convalesce. I know it offends you on some level but it is not your job to bring this to your boss's attention. If he had real concerns about what is going on he could find this all out on his own within a day. Maybe he already knows and isn't interfering because he's hoping she finds another job and leaves on her own.
