Is my boss out of line for embarrassing me for my political beliefs?

I work retail (won't say the name) and today while I was walking out to go home I was checking my cell phone. Now, I am a supporter of Obama and he is on my Myspace and all, and a co-worker jokingly asked if it was Barack calling me.

My manager quickly said "Who!?" and told her that I support Obama.

She then looked at me in disgust and said "Tomorrow's your last day." I think she was joking but I felt belittled and I tried to laugh and said "Ok... whatever" and she repeated it again, "Tomorrow's your last day"

After work a friend who works with me called me and she told me my boss was going on and on about Obama being a Muslim (which is COMPLETELY false).

Should I be offended? Is it even worth my time explaining to my boss that Obama is not a Muslim and I have evidence to prove it or should I just allow her to be ignorant on the subject?

I was really embarrassed today. Thanks.

If you had a witness I would ask your boss to clarify his remark in writing or to retract it.

By insinuating that you should be fired for your political beliefs he is possibly violating any of a series of local, county, state, and federal laws related to this sort of thing, commonly referred to as "employer political intimidation".

So read up on your relevant laws.

You shouldn't be unfair to him/her however, if they retract the statement you should let it go. But if they stick to their guns that your employment is a function of your political beliefs ... I would fight like a samurai!

I would be very offended. Your boss is way out of line.

sure, you can be offended but thats about it. You were off the clock and at that point you are just another person, not an employee.

Rule #1: never ever discuss politics at work. Don't explain anything to your boss or get into an argument with her. It will just poison your work environment even further. If she does fire you, of course you will have legal recourse. But let it slide, and see if she gets over it. Earning a living is more important, for now, than making a political point. Let her stew in her own ignorance. In the long run, you might want to look for a job at a more worker-friendly company.

That is a form of discrimination, although how it was brought up is questionable. If your boss tries to fire you, talk to a lawyer, this may be unlawful termination.

It doesn't matter if your boss fired you for liking Obama, Romney, Kucinich, Paul, or any other candidate. Firing someone based on political beliefs is not an acceptable reason for termination in most cases.

Don't bother trying to change her mind. She's an idiot, because she thinks she can boss her employees around in terms of political support. Never discuss religion or politics with a boss.

If being a political supporter of a left wing liberal Spendocrat doesn't embarass you, I'm surprised that anything can.

Most US States are "employment at will", which means that your boss can fire you for no reason at all.

If she thinks that being an Obama supporter is a severe enough indicator of bad judgment that she doesn't feel comfortable keepng you on staff, that's her right.

Two things that should NOT be discussed in a work environment; your religion and your politics.

Your boss is wrong.....don't make it worse by trying to convince her of your views.

Drop it. And, leave your politics at home.

Never discuss religion or politics, you can bet you will meet with someone who is totally opposed to your beliefs.

That is hard to answer because we don't know you or your boss. We don't know if your boss has a weird sense of humor or is some political zealot. We also don't know if you are just an overly sensitive person.

Just let it all slide off your back and don't let it get to you. If it does get to you, then she wins. She was probably trying to get an argument out of you. Don't try to prove anything because it doesn't matter, her mind is made up. You can talk politics and religion till you are blue in the face and you won't change anyone's minds.

When you go to work tomorrow, see if you are really fired. If so, you would probably need to go over her head to her boss and tell them the situation. Do they really want to pay unemployment? Do they really want a lawsuit? I am sure it is not your last day, but if so, maybe they can move you to a different department.

Well you're probably the closes person to Sen. Obama your supervisor will ever express her feelings to.

You have a right to be offended, but she also has a right to express her opinions.

The best thing you can do is not talk about politics at work. That's a senstive issue, and everyone has their opinion.

At my job, a friend supports Hillary "Billary" Clinton, and I don't but she'd never know it becuase I refuse to talk politics at work.

And keep your evidence, you can't change another person's ignorance when they cleary think it's intellegance they're speaking.

Chances are the comment of it being your last day was a poor attempt at humor. The same as you would make when a friend says they like the Cowboys. You might tell your friend you can't be friends anymore.

I agree with it being a bad idea to discuss politics at work. With that being said and lets also assume it was poor humor.

Why would you be offended? I do not support Obama I disagree with most everything of the party. I think he's super cool and I wish he shared my views. If he gets the nomination he will win. The bright side for me is Hilary won't be. Although your political beliefs are wrong they are yours. Be proud of them and away from work be prepared to stand up with conviction. Also be aware that with in a few percentage points half of the country disagrees with you. It's not your fault our government sucks. (Both sides)
